Mist and Mizzle

15th March 2025

The updated weather forecast this morning dashed any hopes of a dry, clear and sunny morning here in Glen Torridon.  Replaced with variable cloud cover and intermittent mizzle. Overnight, there had been a fresh dusting of snow down to around 600 meters, but the ‘snow’ level soon started to rise as the temperature rose to a balmy +10 degrees at Torridon village by mid afternoon.

Is winter kit (rigid boots, axe and crampons) required for an ascent of the higher peaks? Difficult question to answer as it would depend on which route you were taking and which aspect you are on.  Certainly, if I was heading onto steeper terrain with a Northerly aspect I would definitely have my winter kit with me where colder/icy underfoot conditions may remain.

The photos below give a ‘flavour’ of the Torridonian Peaks. More snow is holding on the shady aspects notably North to East above around 800m. The forecast tomorrow promises a better day than today, with brighter conditions.

The Eastern end of Beinn Eighe taken at 8am this morning before the cloud lowered. Most of the snow on the Southern aspect disappeared by late afternoon.

Looking up into Coire an Laoigh on the South side of Beinn Eighe. Photo taken around 8am this morning. Most of the ‘dusting’ has now gone.

South aspect of Liathach early this morning.

A view across to the North aspect of remote Munro, Meal Chean-Dearg (933m). Only a very superficial dusting of snow remaining by mid-morning.

Looking across to the NE ridge of Beinn Damh (903m), highlighting that ‘most’ snow remains on North to East aspects.

The summit plateau of Beinn na-h-Eaglaise (737m) with the North aspect of Maol Chean-Dearg behind.

Looking across to the South aspect of Liathach from Beinn na-h-Eaglaise.  This wee hill should have delivered magnificent views of the ‘Torridon Giants’. (Well that was the plan….) Instead the view was a little underwhelming.  The cloud base was around 800m which illustrates how the dusting of snow had disappeared on this south facing aspect of Liathach by early afternoon.
