Very thin snow cover

11th March 2025

It was good to see some snow return today, even though the reality is it is a very thin superficial cover on bare ground. Todays observations were from Stuc a Choire Dhuibh Bhig at the East end of Liathach, usually a stunning viewpoint, however the breaks in the clouds never arrived today and the views remained hidden. Summit photos show the very limited amounts of new snow. Slightly more fell in the afternoon and there is more snow in the more inland hills of our area, and even less on the most coastal peaks. Snow initially fell above around 450 metres although at lower levels this rapidly melted as the freezing level rose with the thin cover remaining above around 700 metres. A little more snow is forecast overnight, although amounts are not expected to be significant, then clearing to give a dry day with strong Northerly winds.

Looking towards the Summit of Stuc a choice Dhuibh Bhig (915m) at the East and of Liathach. Very thin snow cover and the usually stunning views remained hidden.

Looking West from just above where the path joins the main ridge the East end of Liathach. Very thin snow cover.

Beinn Alligin, the most coastal hills have least snow cover.
