A Cosmetic Dusting

14th March 2025

The Torridonian Mountains looked stunning today adorned with a white coating, etched against a blue sky…. BUT sadly the illusion of winter is very superficial indeed.  Barely a dusting of snow, lying on bare ground. Still, for the winter of 2025, I’ll take a cosmetic dusting.

A ridge of high pressure will bring dry and settled conditions over the weekend.  The freezing level overnight will be around 700m then rising to summit level during the day, so sadly todays ‘illusion of winter’ will gradually disappear on Saturday.  Leaving snow only on the highest tops and on shady aspects.

The photos below show a ‘flavour’ of conditions in the Torridon region today.

Eastern end of Beinn Eighe with the summit of Creag Dhubh in the centre of the photo.

A wider shot of the Beinn Eighe massif. It is clear that the snow cover is very ‘cosmetic’. Photo taken from the summit of Bidein Clann Raonaild (466m).

Liathach from the East. Temperatures in the glen rose to +8 degrees Celsius. Any ‘top up’ of snow from the isolated snow showers soon disappeared on sun affected aspects.
