Strong winds and the continuing thaw.

23rd January 2023

Continuing mild with the freezing level well above the summits. The snow pack, while wet is generally well bonded and stable with perhaps the risk of a few isolated wet snow instabilities remaining on very steep terrain on North through East to South-East aspects above 750 m. Elsewhere there is not much snow remaining. Many ridge crest and wind exposed slopes are bare of snow and there are only a few snow patches remaining below 550 metres. It is expected that the freezing level will lower by the end of the week.

Looking up towards Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe, the ridge crest is bare of snow and cornices

have all but disappeared. The steeper crags are becoming bare.

Plenty snow in wind sheltered coires.

The view down towards Kinlochewe, not much snow remaining at lower levels.

Looking towards Slioch.

The path up along the Alt a Churin, it’s a special place! Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe beyond.
