It’s more like winter now!

16th January 2023

Fresh and deep snow down to all levels now. It was feeling cold with the wind chill on the hills today but trail breaking was sufficient to maintain body warmth. There were many red deer grazing at lower levels. Windslab instabilities are becoming increasingly widespread, deep and unstable at higher levels on wind sheltered terrain mainly North through East to Southerly aspects. Cornices have developed and are fragile. Steeper cuttings, stream banks and hollows have deep accumulations of soft snow.

Some cracking in a deeper accumulation of windslab.

Typical view for much of my morning.

Looking back at my tracks descending from Fionn Bheinn. There was an occasional hint of warming sunshine!

The view to a Southerly direction, plenty snow redistribution in the strong winds.

The snow plough drivers were out – a fantastic and much appreciated service!
