Fluctuating temperatures

5th February 2022

Today was a day of fluctuating temperatures. After snow to road level yesterday and early last night, there was rain to around summit level the morning before the freezing level dropped to around 300 metres this afternoon. The rain and rise and fall in temperatures helped consolidate the windslab that accumulated yesterday and last night. However further windslab is now developing on North-East to South -East aspects above 750 metres.

Looking into Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe. Windslab has accumulated in gullies and around the coire rim. This has started to consolidate with the fluctuating temperatures this morning.

Looking to Sgurr Fian Dubh, Beinn Eighe. The gully lines are South facing and have cross loaded in the strong Westerly winds.

Looking across Glen Torridon to Sgurr Dubh (782m). A lot of the snow below this height has melted in the thaw this morning. The snow in the foreground is also soft and thawing.

Looking to Creag Dubh, Beinn Eighe, later in the day when the visibility cleared. Only a few days ago this was mainly bare ground.
