A Welcome Break from the wind

11th February 2022

Today was much calmer and a welcome break from what has seemed like a very windy winter.  Early morning showers cleared bringing a brief spell of reasonable weather and visibility before the next showers move in this evening.

Looking up the track towards Spidean Coire nan Clach on Beinn Eighe.  The snow level is around 400m on these South aspects.

Looking up into the Easterly aspects of Coire an Laoigh, photo taken around 600m.  Above 700m was really hard going due to the breakable crust.  Below this level, the snow had consolidated and refrozen after yesterdays thaw.

Large (4/5 mm) graupel is present at ground level in Coire an Laoigh @ 800m.  This is buried beneath more recent deposits of windslab. Graupel has potential to create a weak layer within the snowpack.  Here it is overlain by harder layers and unlikely to be a hazard at this time.
