A dry and calm day – and its more like winter.

9th January 2020

A return to more wintry conditions with the hills looking white in Torridon. Further inland there seems to be a bit more snow. I was up on Creag Dubh, Beinn Eighe today and it was quite fine. However there are some shallow and minor wind slab instabilities on some wind sheltered crests, gully tops and coire rims above 700 metres, but these are generally stable and avoidable but never the less if you are crossing through these areas, mounting on to or coming off a ridge its worth being prudent as there are some weaknesses with-in the snow pack. Do remember, its possible to get avalanched on a Low so its worth clicking on to and reading our avalanche bulletin.

Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe, showing some shallow drifting on to both North aspects (foreground) and South aspects in the mid-distance.

The view over towards Slioch.

Wonderful Kinlochewe and the hills beyond!
