Spring Has Sprung

25th March 2017

A beautiful day to be out for a mountain walk! Spring conditions; soft snow in the sun and firmer in the shade. There remains a reasonable cover of snow above 800 metres, but patchy below this level and many South to West facing slopes are bare. More of the same forecast for tomorrow.(Above)  The lovely walk into Beinn Eighe through the Caledonian pines. Most snow remains above 800 metres and is a relatively shallow cover.(Above)  Looking down the east ridge of Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe, across Kinlochewe to the Fannaich mountains behind. Very limited snowpack on the sunny aspects.(Above)  Great visibility for distant views.(Above)  Recent cornice collapse as ‘droopy’ cornices are affected/softened by the sun. Localised small cornices remain above some North-East to South-East steep slopes.Southern aspects of Slioch.
