Totally Tropical

21st February 2019

Not much snow surviving this protracted warm spell. 15C at 250m. today when I returned to the car! And it looks set to continue.

An Ullapool front door sunrise this morning with black looking Beinn Dearg hills on the skyline.

Morning sunlight on Ullapool, but not a drop of snow remains on Beinn Ghobhlach at 635m.

Snow patches on north top of Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich at 830m.

Persistent summit cloud on the Beinn Dearg hills.

A wet snowpack with a basal layer of very wet snow and slush (the grey layer) adjacent to the grass. In fact there was running water on the surface of the grass. Snowpacks may become lubricated by water at times of heavy thaw leading to glide cracks as the snow creeps downslope and in some instances, full depth avalanches.
