West is Best

9th February 2025

Another incredible day in the Western reaches of Torridon area. ‘Wall to wall’ blue sky and sunshine. A hard frost in the glens soon clearing in sun affected areas. Further East, banks of ‘temperature inversion’ cloud ‘rolled’ over and around the glens and ridges with dramatic effect.

There is very little change in the remaining snow patches which are well consolidated and stable. Softening slightly on sun exposed aspects, otherwise remaining firm/icy and with very consequential runouts onto rocky exposed terrain.

Looking up the Allt a Chuirn on the extreme Eastern end of the Beinn Eighe ridge. Summit of Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe on the left and Creag Dhubh on the right with the Black Carls in between. This photo sums up where the remaining snow patches can be found on North through East to South-East aspects above 750m.

A closer view of Creag Dhubh on the right of the photo with the Black Carls on the left. Another cobalt blue sky day.

Blankets of low level temperature inversion cloud ‘rolling’ and ‘flowing’ over the hillside down into the glen.

Looking across to Slioch. Virtually no snow there!

Underfoot conditions were pretty treacherous on the approach paths after the hard overnight freeze.

Frost on the Racomitrium (moss).
