A ‘Stella’ day on Beinn Eighe

Temperature inversion this morning: minus 4 degrees Celsius in Glen Torridon and a balmy plus 4.7 degrees at 470m. It felt like a beautiful Spring day with ‘wall to wall’ sunshine and blue sky. Snow cover in the Torridon area is now very patchy and mainly confined to steep North through East to South-East aspects above 750m. The snow patches softened if they were exposed to the warm sunshine, but remained firm/icy in the shade.
Ascending on firm snow in the east facing corrie of Coire an Laoigh on Beinn Eighe at around 750m. The snow here had not long been exposed to the sun and remained firm with serious and consequential run outs.

The corrie rim of Coire an Laoigh c 850m. Here the surface of the snow had softened slightly but as soon as you stepped into the shade it was very firm. The blue sky in the background is not ‘photo shopped’ this was the real deal (all day).
‘No snow here’. Looking east along the main ridge of Beinn Eighe towards the southern aspects of Sgurr Ban and Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe.
Looking across the northern shady aspects of Beinn Eighe with Liathach behind. The trig point on Spidean Coire nan Clach is a real anomaly and must catch many a Munro bagger out in poor visibility. The true summit lies approximately 200m NE of the trig point.
