The calm before Eowyn.
22nd January 2025
Still no snow to give any hazard today, but some snow is forecast tomorrow (Thursday), afternoon, then it will all change with the arrival of Eowyn on Friday, with more significant snow forecast. So, we are back to forecasts today, with a Low avalanche hazard forecast for tomorrow, mainly covering late tomorrow afternoon. Please see the forecast for details.
A nice calm day today. I got round the back of Liathach, and Beinn Eighe, and lo and behold, there is a decent surviving snow patch in Torridon. See the picture below.
Tomorrow is dry in the morning with some snow in the afternoon and fresh to strong South-Easterly winds on the tops.
Below are some pictures of Liathach and Beinn Eighe, and some philosophical musing on rocks!
A fairly decent snow patch high up in Coireag Cham, below Mullach an Rathain, Liathach. By far our biggest remaining snow patch in Torridon. It was good to spot this today as I had believed there was no snow patches like this still left.
Creag Dubh, right, to Sgurr Ban and the Black Carls on the left.
The east end of Liathach.
Sunlight on Spidean Coire nan Clach, Beinn Eighe, this morning.
The great Winter climbing coire’s of Liathach. Coireag Dubh Beag on the left, and Coireag Dubh Mor on the right.
Triple Buttress, Coire Mhic Fhearchair, Beinn Eighe.
Ice trying to grow from colder temperatures last night, at around 350 metres. It was gone when I headed back down.
An erratic, split by weathering and frost / ice action many, many years ago judging by the weathering. I wonder if these two pieces will still be side by side, or on opposite sides of the world millions of years from now, when the human race is likely long since gone.
How long will this one last as one piece before weathering and ice split it? The way our Winters are going, perhaps quite some time.
