Winter Wonderland

Today was one of those special winter days on the hill – glorious. I’m so glad I didn’t overindulge on Hogmanay so I could fully appreciate it! Light snow showers drifting in a light Easterly breeze with gossamer thin clouds at times enveloping the summits….. It was brighter with fewer showers along the coastal fringes.
There remains a relatively shallow and stable snow cover on all aspects with the main snowline around 300m. Deeper drifts exist mainly on NE to SE aspects with moderately bonded windslab in steep localised areas same aspects, mostly at higher elevations. Fresh soft windslab forming in isolated pockets, steep terrain on higher Westerly aspects where the wind is a bit stronger.

(Above) The NE aspects of Carn na Criche and Meall a’ Chrasgaidh as seen through a ‘snow haze’ during the passing of a light snow shower.
(Above) Evidence of ice falls forming on Creag Carn na Criche. The freezing level was at glen level initially, but rose to around 450m. by midday. Still cold enough for ice to form in the high coires and feeling pretty cold on the summits.
