Angry Mountains

18th December 2022

Both metaphorically and emotionally, it was an angry day in the hills today. Gale force winds, spindrift  and deep snow drifts made for a frustrating and grumpy walk/snowshoe! Significant snow redistribution of the soft snow onto wind sheltered terrain was expected today, but most snow was blown off the exposed areas to lower elevations and with a rising freezing level, much of it melted. There will be a heightened period of snowpack instability tomorrow as the freezing level remains well above the summits with periods of rain through the day.

(Above 3 photos) Much scouring of the existing snowpack on Meall an t-Sithe (601m) with spindrift blowing to lower levels in the gale force SE wind. Compare these photos with yesterday’s photo of Meall an t-Sithe. An Teallach is in the background of the middle photo.

(Above) Angry looking clouds mixed with spindrift over the main Fannaich mountains. Loch a’Bhraoin in the fore.

    Been there, done that.

Both literally and metaphorically, I feel your pain.
