A Cold and Snowy Torridon

Challenging trail breaking in the Torridon hills. Deep, soft, occasionally unconsolidated snow cover on all aspects and altitudes. But the snow is basically lying on bare ground – no base. However, at higher elevations, there are areas of moderately bonded windslab that have accumulated in previously wind sheltered steep locations. (Above) Liathach and the snowy single track road first thing this morning. It was -5C in the glen and the clouds thickened up and rolled in by lunchtime, ahead of snowfall.

(Above) Deep soft snow and flat light at 600m. – rather tedious trail breaking….! Looking into Coire an Laoigh of Beinn Eighe. The snowpack was beginning to consolidate in places. The clouds descended onto the summits and light snow was in the air.
