‘The Mist Covered Mountains’
26th March 2022
Question. Who made famous the song with the same title as the above headline and what film did it soundtrack for? 3 points for correct answer!
Anyway, it was a cloudy morning with summit mist and pulses of drizzle drifted in from the South-West, particularly affecting the more coastal mountains. Brighter in the afternoon. Little change in the spring snowpack however, as it will remain patchy, generally well bonded and stable throughout. More sunshine expected tomorrow than was in evidence today….(Above) A view looking across Loch a’ Bhraoin onto the southern Fannaichs. Cloud base is around 750m. Not much snow in evidence below cloud base!(Above) Busy in the hills today despite the cloudy conditions. (Above) Low cloud and drizzle drifting across Creag Rainich on a light Westerly breeze.

The line was actually ‘THESE’ not ‘The’ Mist Covered Mountains from the song Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits.

Mark Knopfler – Local Hero?
Many thanks for some wonderful reports this past winter. We’ve had barely any snow on the tops here in North Wales, so SAIS helps keep us sane…

Thanks for all the info! Would be interested to hear a bit more about which routes and summits are becoming accessible without axe and crampons as spring progresses. (Or, with the new snow on the on the way, which ones change back to winter routes!)

Hi George. Best to keep an eye on our blogs for example to get an idea of the snow distribution. However, carrying axe and crampons (and having the knowledge of how to use them effectively) is recommended even in spring snowpack conditions where very firm refrozen snow is common. Thanks for your comments. SAIS Torridon.
