Blustery Showers

13th March 2019

A showery day, some heavy and prolonged and wintery on the summits. The snowline is around 550m, thawing snowpack at lower levels and very wet underfoot. Dodgy river crossings – thank goodness for walking poles!

North-East aspects of Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich and Sgurr Mor (on the right). Despite the strong NW wind and relatively frequent showers, there is no evidence of drifting as it is relatively mild with the freezing level around 850 metres. Today’s snowpack observations were made on the rim of the summit slope centre left.

Snow profile at 713m below the summit of North top, Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich. Check out our profile page for details – sais.gov.uk/torridon. There is a relatively weak layer about 1/3 depth (around 30cm), buried graupel and below wet surface layers.

Looking north onto the Beinn Dearg hills. Summit cloud persisted throughout the day.
