Another splendiferous day
11th January 2018
Looking east to the top of Spidean Coire nan Clach and the rest of the Beinn Eighe ridge.
View to the west, Liathach and beyond. Ice still building in the north facing corries but any south facing ice melting and collapsing in the sun.
Some lovely sparkly surface hoar crystals this morning after low overnight temperatures
Stopping for a cup of tea on the way down I came across this chap. I’ve no idea what type.

Most likely to be a northern eggar (depending on which guide you consult this is either a sub species or just the northern race of the oak eggar). This is by far the most common hairy caterpillar in the Highlands, feeding on heather, and has a 2 year life cycle so overwinters as a caterpillar in its first year, whereas most species overwinter as pupae.

Thanks for that Matt. I knew we could rely on someone supplying a sensible answer!
