Cold and Windy

29th December 2017

The theme for today was ‘spindrift’. Cold temperature, loose snow and a strong East wind combined to re-distribute lying snow onto wind sheltered aspects producing unstable windslab, albeit, mostly quite localised. Cross loading was a notable feature today also. The wind will ease tonight, with a bit warmer tomorrow as light rain, sleet and snow arrives along with strengthening South-Westerlies.

The ‘haze’ over the distant Achnashellach hills is indicative of spindrift – lying loose snow re-distributed onto lee aspects.

The easiest walking was to stay on wind scoured areas.

Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe. Wind scoured exposed summit ridges.

A gloomy Liathach.

Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe. The East and North ridges have been blown clear of snow.
