A Glorious Inversion
28th March 2017
Another great spring day to be out walking in the mountains. Perfect snow conditions for covering much ground with the snow generally firm underfoot but with a soft wet surface layer. Patchy cloud as it lifted out of the glens in generally light winds.(Above) Inversion cloud spilling from the east over the saddle below Sgurr Breac. The snowline is around 650m with most snow above 800m.(Above) Northern aspects of A’ Chailleach. Snow mainly in gullies, couloirs, along ridge flanks and on steep summit slopes.(Above) Cloud lifted and became broken later. Looking into the main Fannaich mountains.(Above) That time of year again when the ‘keepers of our mountain environment’ set fire to the hills in what is supposed to be controlled muir burning – I don’t think so! As the public we are ‘allowed’ responsible access to our mountains, but in return for responsible management by the landowners I’d have thought? Beinn Dearg in the background, with further burning starting on the slopes of Beinn EnaiglairResponsible management of our mountain environment? Again, I don’t think so! ATV tracks at 700m on Druim Reidh, Toman Coinnich, Fannaich mountains. There should be no reason why this is occurring at such a height (apart from laziness and arrogance) on such a sensitive mountain habitat. On a lighter note, it was great to see and hear the Golden Plover back on Druim Reidh today. And some Red Grouse too.

Very important to highlight these ‘trashings’ of the high hills.
I never quite know if AC is Andy or Alaister.
