Yet Another Good Day

11th February 2017

As can be seen from the photos below, the snow cover is generally shallow and sparse, with the main snowline around 550 metres. Isolated pockets of deeper snow exist at higher elevations where weaknesses remain, particularly below the surface crust. Very cold at summit level with a high windchill.

Another snow profile site with a view on an area of hard windslab just below the summit of Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich. From left to right; Sgurr Mor, Carn na Criche, Meall a’ Chrasgaidh (behind Loch a Mhadaidh) and An Teallach background right.

Cracking underfoot. This is a surface crust on a shallow snowpack. Fortunately, not an extensive feature, but could become an issue if overlain by fresh accumulations of snow.

The higher Fannaich mountains from the summit of Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich.

Surface hoar around a Mountain Hare footprint.

There is extensive surface hoar (and some riming on the old blades of ‘grass’ during periods of cloud) at the moment – cold, clear and calm conditions.
