Fluctuating temperatures

15th March 2026

The current active weather systems are creating a changeable snowpack.

During today’s observations the previous nights fresh windslab had already been rained on and then a subsequent layer of new snow fell on top as the freezing level lowered again throughout the day.

The fluctuating temperature are really helping with stability, however there are still moderately bonded layers of snow in deeper accumulations, mostly on steep terrain above 800 metres on North-East aspects.

Some new isolated windslab accumulations tonight and tomorrow morning will be poorly bonded where they gain depth in steep terrain. Another temperature rise at the end of tomorrow will see continued instability. (see report for more detail).

Improving weather and high pressure are looking possible from Wednesday onwards.

Stability was generally good, although some weakness remain at depth.
