Fionn Bheinn, and the end of Winter ? (But not for us Pagans!)

28th February 2025

Wanted to get a good look into a high NE facing coire today so Fionn Bheinn fitted the bill. There was some new snow up there from the past few days. This is generally well bonded within itself, and also very well bonded to the older snowpack where it exists. Temperature at the summit was bang on zero degrees when I checked it, so it’s not really that cold up there, and this is allowing the snow to continue to consolidate.

Some overnight snow is expected above 900 metres, rain below this. The total forecast amount is a little uncertain so there is the potential for a little more than expected. However, the snow is expected to be fairly moist, with freezing level just around the summits when it falls. This should ensure that this fresh snow will be relatively well bonded within itself and to any existing snowpack. During the day on Saturday, the weather should be dry with bright spells. Looking ahead, freezing levels are forecast to rise during Sunday to just above the tops as another front comes through on Sunday evening.

Today, 28th February was the final day of Meteorological Winter, (see illustration at the bottom of the blog), but the Astronomical pagans amongst us still have another 19 days of Winter to look forward to!
