Subtilties of Change

14th February 2025

Today was again a beautiful day with plenty of morning sunshine, still feeling cold in the light to moderate Easterly winds, high cloud an early subtle indicator of what became a cloudier but still bright afternoon. With a temperature inversion and sunny conditions it felt relatively warm in the wind sheltered Coire an Laoigh with snow patches softening slightly on the surface. Rime deposits and frost were plentiful in the colder wind exposed and shaded locations, mainly above 850 metres. The summit temperature was -1.7c.

The nearing west coast fronts are no longer expected to bring much change to the Torridon area, with tomorrow remaining dry and cloudy. However, with ‘strong’ to possibly ‘gale force’ Easterly winds during the afternoon the wind chill is expected to be considerable.

Morning sunshine enhancing the Easterly aspects of Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe and North-Easterly aspect of Creag Dhubh.

Coire an Laoigh, above 600 metres, with a shaded North to North-East aspect and sunny East to South-East aspect.

Frost crystals in the cold Easterly winds looking back towards Stuc Coire an Laoigh.

Looking West along the Beinn Eighe ridge towards Coinneach Mhor and Rhuadh-Stac Mor with snow patches in the northern corries. In the back ground Liathach, Beinn Alligin and Baosbheinn.

Walkers (and dogs) on the high 993m summit of Spidean Coire nan Clach.

With a couple of forecasters out today, a wider spread of areas covered was achievable.

Looking into the North to East aspects of the northern Fannacich mountains of (L to R) Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich, Sgurr Mor and Carn na Criche. Greatest amounts of snow remain on these aspects.

Although outside of the Torridon forecast area, there are similar amounts of snow lingering on the SW aspect of Beinn Dearg.

The Eastern coires of An Teallach.

The North and East aspects of Sgurr Mor; the highest mountain in the Torridon forecast area at 1110m.

The NE and E aspects of Meall a’ Chrasgaigh in the Fannaich mountains.
