Alternate Reality
21st February 2025
Today was another warm, wet and windy one. Too many times this winter I have juggled with these three words!
At one point in the day, I ventured along the A835 to Loch Glascarnoch for views into the north Fannaich mountains. There is a roadside SAWS (Semi Automatic Weather Station) at the NW end of the loch where I pondered on the words ‘weather station‘. What if it was a station where we could be transported to a place with weather of our choice? Into an alternate reality or parallel universe? What weather would you buy a ticket for?
Anyway, the patchy snow cover is thawing at all levels and will slowly diminishing even further over the weekend. There is currently mostly bare ground across the Torridon forecast area.
Below are a few ‘moist’ photos of the snow cover in the mountains in the north our area.
(Above) The Weather Station – ‘Arriving platform 1 is the Warm and Sunny Express…’ The reading for midday; +11C, 13mph, SE. The station is at 265m. altitude.
In the background are the North to East aspects of Meall Gorm (949m) and An Coileachan (923m) in the Fannaichs. Most snow remains round coire rims and ridge flanks above 800m. on these aspects.
(Above) Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich and Sgurr Mor on the right. The lowest patch of snow is at around 650m.
(Above) The NE slopes of Meall a’ Crasgaidh through a veil of rain!

Sgurr Breac left, Toman Coinnich middle and A’ Chailleach on the right.
