Overcast

27th January 2025

It was a cloudy day with limited views and flat light. Not a great day for photos but a few from some clearer moments are below.

I mentioned in yesterdays blog that there was a difference between the hazard forecast for yesterday and the observed hazard. There is also a difference today but for another reason. The forecast is for a 24 hour period from 18:00 on the day of issue until 18:00 the following day. A moderate hazard was issued yesterday and this would have been the correct hazard overnight. The observed hazard is what we observe during the day on the mountain and by the time I was out this morning rising temperatures had helped to consolidate the snowpack further, stability had improved, and the hazard had dropped to Low.

It’s definitely worth considering that the avalanche hazard changes over time, even within a 24 hour period. Careful reading of the text of the avalanche report will usually highlight these changes while just looking at the overall hazard doesn’t.

Many thanks for the additional details. I find interpreting the risks difficult at times and these little nugget always help.
