In Search of the White Stuff

20th January 2025

Mild, broken cloud and a few light rain showers in the Fannaichs today. I was hopeful of maybe a hint of fresh snow on the highest summits, but alas no! However, there appears to be marginally more patches of old snow lingering in North to East coires of the higher peaks of the Fannaichs than in the Torridon mountains.  But greater than 99% bare ground overall in the Torridon forecast area.

A dusting of fresh snow is likely on the highest summits overnight and at times during the day tomorrow as the freezing level lowers to around 900m. Hopefully it will look a bit more like winter, but not enough new snow to present an avalanche hazard.

Winter returns? There is a high confidence that there will be more unsettled weather by next weekend as a deep low pressure system is spun up by a very strong jet stream over the Atlantic – likely another named storm with accompanying snow in the mountains. Watch this space…
