19.6 🏆 Record January UK Temperature

28th January 2024

The ferocious Southerly wind in Torridon today was like a powerful hair dryer on maximum setting. Rapid depletion of the snow cover. Heading off from the Glen for a corrie on the South side of Beinn Eighe it was 12.5c. Astonishingly it got warmer. Returning to the car early afternoon it was 17.5.

Above; looking down to Loch Clair from Beinn Eighe.

Kinlochewe village lies 4 miles to the North East of the loch. Kinlochewe is where history was made today. A temperature of 19.6c was recorded there today. This is the warmest ever January temperature recorded in UK.

Above; Southerly aspects are more or less bare of snow.
Below; The East end of Beinn Eighe above Kinlochewe. It is on the the higher North to East aspects that most snow remains. With lower temperatures on the way the moist snowpack will re freeze rapidly.

The fohn effect. Excellent snow stripper. Good old Kinlochewe, has a bit of a reputation for temperature records, on the quiet.
