Winter on the Way

14th December 2018

Welcome to the first day of this season’s Torridon area blog. It seems that winter has come and gone with good snow conditions at times through November. Following recent thaws at all levels, little snow remains and most hills are presently bare! However, it’s all change this weekend with periods of snow and gale force winds forecast. Due to mild and moist air at times tomorrow, freezing rain is possible producing a covering of verglas.

Alpenglow on Creag Dhubh at the east end of Beinn Eighe this morning. The venue for today’s observations.

Not much snow remains on the main ridge of Beinn Eighe – all looking very ‘summery’. However, what the photo doesn’t portray is the gale force wind and -1.4C giving a good windchill. It was Baltic! Note the lenticular cloud formations – indicative of high winds at altitude.

The cold air does give some wonderfully sharp views. Looking from Creag Dhubh (Beinn Eighe) across to the Fannaich mountains. Not much snow there either.
