Rising temperatures and ice appearing from the snow.

18th February 2018

Sunday was a better day in the North West than expected. Temperatures rose to 6c in the Torridon glen by mid afternoon but it was dry all day. There were even a couple of people out bouldering!

The Bealach na Ba snow gate was still closed. Whilst getting our boots on wet a few foreign North Coast 500 tourists looking for directions and answers as to why the road was shut. It was difficult for them to comprehend the difference in conditions between 100 and 600 metres above sea level.

Great views into the corries of Beinn Bhan. We received reports today of two large avalanches in Coire an Fhamair on Friday as well as numerous cornice collapses.

Spying from the car is often a useful part of our day. It is a good way to gain additional information.

As warmer temperatures began to melt some of the light superficial snow cover a significant amount of ice came in to view in many places. Allegedly there were parties climbing in the Northerly corries of Liathach today. Hopefully we can give an update tomorrow.
