A Little More Snow
31st January 2016
Although there are areas of deeper snow drifts, cover high up is less than expected, with most exposed summits and ridges more or less bare. Light snowfall throughout the day. Heavy rain overnight will herald the approach of ‘Henry’ with accompanying storm force winds.
I think it’s a boy! An obvious weakness in the snowpack – a significant layer of graupel. It was so dry and unconsolidated it drained out of the profile. Fortunately, this graupel layer was very localised to crag aprons and run-outs below steep slopes.
