Waterfalls Defying Gravity
24th December 2023
Storm force Westerly winds, freezing levels above the summits and heavy rain showers here in the Torridon forecast area today. The majority of fresh snow has thawed and ended up in the burns and rivers which were all in spate. Only isolated patches of the old snow remain, predominately above 800 meters in North East to South East coires and around the coire rims. Tomorrow (Christmas Day) is looking cooler and fresh snow is expected on the tops, so fingers crossed for a White Christmas here in Torridon:-)
It’s never a good sign when waterfalls are ‘defying gravity’. Photo below is the waterfall coming off the west flank of Beinn a Mhuinidh at the southern end of Loch Maree.
Photo below highlights how little snow remains looking up towards the Eastern end of Beinn Eighe (Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe)

And finally, I spotted the apparently quite rare ‘Mother of Pearl’ clouds on my drive to Torridon this morning. Giving quite a spectacular ‘cloud scape’, above the Dornoch Firth area around 9am. Find out more at Nacreous clouds – Met Office
