Nearing the End!

12th January 2018

As the recent blocking high pressure system drifts eastward, our fine settled weather and conditions will deteriorate over the next few days as depressions queue up to sweep across the country with strong winds and a bit of snow on the summits. It also becomes colder next week. But today was another fine winter mountain day.

There was an early frost in the glens this morning, but it disappeared by mid morning as the temperature rose.

Lovely to walk through the Loch Maree Caledonian pinewoods for access into the mountains and nice to see some natural regeneration.

Although the main snowline is relatively high, it remains wintery at higher levels. The surface crust is still not generally weight-bearing – well my weight unfortunately!

The North aspects of Beinn Eighe. It gradually clouded over through the day from the South and the SE winds freshened.

As the cloud thickened from the South, wave bars and lenticular clouds began to form – an indication of strong winds at higher elevations and usually means that the wind will strengthen at lower levels later.
