Wintry, but no significant change.
25th March 2026
Much more wintery looking on the hills today. Snow showers down to glen level, but only really settling above around 500 metres. Not significant amounts, and certainly not enough to increase the avalanche hazard during today.
Slightly lighter winds than forecast, which meant that there was not much sign of drifting when I could see to the summits. A lot of the precipitation was in the form of Graupel. This can create a very unstable layer if it gets overlain with more fresh snow. However, we are not forecast any significant snow fall, so this is unlikely to be the case.
Looking ahead, remaining cold into Thursday with very light scattered showers. By the end of the day on Thursday freezing levels will go above the summits accompanied by some overnight rain. Friday will see freezing levels dropping back to around 700 metres, with squally snow showers and Strong to Gale Force South Westerly winds on the tops.
Creag Dubh, Beinn Eighe. Not a lot of evidence of fresh build up.
Ruadh-stac Mor on the right, Ruadh-stac beat on the left, Spidean, on the main Beinn Eighe ridge in the background.
Ruadh-stac Beag’s North side.
Ruadh-stac Mor, and Sail Mor.
The NE side of Sail Mhor, Beinn Eighe.
Beinn Lair, Letterewe.
Slioch across Loch Maree
Graupel in a slush pool. An indication of what sort of deposition is happening in the hills.
Large Graupel, which came down in a thunderstorm shower.
The graupel being easy to see on the head of a black wolf!
