Firm snow at higher elevations

6th February 2026

It was another mainly dry day with gale force Easterly winds and the cloud base remaining stubbornly around 700 metres. Most of the snow cover is frustratingly above 700 metres, the photos from the North side of Liathach, give an idea of the snow amounts higher up. Most summits in the area have a good cover of very firm snow with serious consequences in the event of a slip or trip, particularly on steep ground. The more coastal hills have less snow than the rest of the area.

North side of Liathach, Coireag Dubh Beag on the left, Coireag Dubh Mor on the right.

A closer look at the snow below the clouds in Coireag Dubh Mor. The could base is around 700 metres so significant amounts of firm snow remain at higher elevations.

Looking into Coire na Caime on the North side of Liathach. Again cloud base around 700 metres so an indication of significant snow remaining at higher elevations.

Significant snow remaining in Glas-Toll a’ Bothain, the North facing slopes beyond Meall Dearg on the North side of Liathach. Again cloud base around 700 metres.

The Corbett Beinn Dearg (914m), one of the more coastal hills with a lot less snow than most the hills in the Torridon area.
