More of the same

24th January 2026

Another day of strong easterly winds and poor visibility on the tops.

It was good to get above the snow line and test how much the colder temperatures have penetrated the snowpack. At around 600 metres I was still breaking through a crust into soft wet snow and progress was frustratingly slow. At 700 metres the snow firmed up and crampons were definitely useful for progress.

(Above) Todays venue choice was Creag Dhubh at the eastern end of the Beinn Eighe massif.

(Above) Snow patches at around 500 metres. Small snow bridges over streams were a hazard at this level due to soft snow.

(Above) Snow patches at around 600 metres.

(Above) This snow pit was at 700 metres and there was about 9cm of well frozen snow on the surface layer which was great for making progress with crampons.

(Above) Helper or hinderance? not sure when she started chasing frozen snow debris down the slope.
