Liathach

20th January 2026

Todays observations were from Mullach an Rathain on Liathach. The snowpack is soft at most elevations, hard going on foot without snow shoes particularly where snow has been in the sun, firmer on some slopes near the summits. There is snow cover above 400 metres here with good cover above around 500 metres, slightly higher snowline on some nearby hills.

Photos also received from an off duty forecaster from An Teallach and the Fannichs.

Overnight Tuesday the soft snow will gradually thaw in the milder temperatures and gale force winds, particularly noticeable at lower levels.  The snow surface will then become significantly firmer above 800 metres during the day on Wednesday as the freezing level falls. Any overnight precipitation is expected to be limited and rain at most levels with the possibility of a little wet snow on the highest summits.

The forecast then indicates very windy conditions on Thursday and Friday with snow loss on Thursday before the freezing level falls again later on Thursday and into Friday. As the forecast winds are from the South-East the Torridon area is expected to get very limited new snow over the next few days.
