Drifting snow

10th January 2026

Observations today were from Beinn Liath Mhor in the Fannichs. A fine start gave some views of the snow in the Fannichs. However the cloud came in and snow above around 400 metres started from late morning. Stronger than expected South-Easterly winds gave drifting of both the existing and new snow. This drifting will continue through the night before the freezing level rises and gives a period of instability. Rain will continue for most of the day and into Monday before the freezing level drops again on Tuesday. Photos from the Fannichs are from before the weather deteriorated and are not what people may have experienced on the hill if you were out after midday. A couple of photos from a drive down Glen Torridon later in the day as well.

Sgurr Dubh at 782m on the South side of Glen Torridon. Drifting near the summit could be seen from the roadside this afternoon.

Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe this afternoon. The car park for this approach to Beinn Eighe and also the Coire Dubh Mor parking are not cleared, giving limited options for these approaches.
