Cloudy summits

14th January 2026

The cloud base was at around 700 metres all day today which meant that all the higher summits were in the cloud.

Variable snow conditions with thawing at lower elevations, a crust on the old snow and fresh windslab above around 500 metres. Showers of rain/sleet/snow with a freezing level around 850 metres.

Photos below from Creag Dhubh, Beinn Eighe.

Looking towards Creag Dhubh.

Looking up the East ridge of Creag Dhubh. The summit remained in cloud all day.

Plenty of older and fresh snow on the East ridge of Creag Dhubh. Patchy at mid height and almost snow free in the glen.

Cornices remain a hazard. The older ones such as this have reasonable stability after a refreeze but more fragile fresh cornices are also present.

Slioch.
