Verglas on Liathach

30th December 2025

Today was a cold clear stunning day with fantastic views. However after some drizzle yesterday before the temperature dropped there was verglas on the rocks on the higher ground on the approach to Spidean a Choire Leith on Liathach. Despite the glorious weather and lack of snow this proved a significant hazard underfoot and may well have affected the other high ridges in the area.

There is currently still minimal snow in The Torridon area with most hills and ridges free of snow only some old snow patches on the highest steep North to East facing slopes and coire rims. Change is due to start Wednesday with some summit snow from late morning. More significant snow to lower levels is forecast from Thursday.

Looking towards Spidean a Coire Leith on Liathach. The ground was particularly slippy underfoot at this point. More due to verglas (a thin layer of ice on the rock) than the frost seen on the rocks in this photo.

An attempt at photographing verglas, it is particularly difficult to picture but the larger flat rocks and some of the smaller ones were coated in a thin layer of ice.

South side of Beinn Eighe, any remaining snow patches are around the coire rims on the North side.
