The thaw continues

5th March 2025

I tried to get as high as I could today without getting blown over. Even at 550 metres, when exposed, it was difficult to keep on your feet. What little I saw confirmed that we have had a rapid thawing of the old patchy snow that was clinging on around high Coire rims.

This will continue over the next 24 hours as well, so by the weekend I suspect next to no snow will be left in the Torridon hills.

More rain is forecast overnight tonight, some heavy. A drier day on Thursday but the winds still remain Gale force at altitude, and the freezing level remains well above the summits.

Looking ahead, Friday is generally settled but remains warm, the weekend is mixed, with the best weather most likely on Sunday. It does look like we will return to colder conditions on the hills early next week.

Beinn A Mhuinidh, with the waterfall and waterfall buttress in the centre. A seldom in condition, and much prized, classic ice climb. I wonder when was the last time that it was climbed ?

Meall Ghiuthais across a storm tossed lochan, that was doing a good impression of an Atlantic storm today. At just under 900 metres, this hill had snow at the start of the week. All gone now.

A common frog (I think), on the path today.

A common frog (I think), on the path today. He wasn’t for budging, and obviously was in search of spring type activities in the warmer weather.
