Sunshine! But bitterly Cold

5th January 2025

A beautiful day, with plenty of sun, light to moderate winds and good snow cover. Although it clouded over in the afternoon from the south. It was very cold in the glens – minus 7.4C at the carpark at 270m this morning and the moderate Easterly breeze at summit levels gave a significant windchill.

Little change in the snowpack from yesterday – generally shallow, unconsolidated and stable. However, isolated areas of moderately bonded windslab persist at higher elevations.

The current areas of windslab will largely persist through tomorrow and fresh winslab will build in steep wind sheltered locations through the day, but amounts will be small.

Below are some mountain panoramas from this morning, mainly of the northern Fannaichs and the Great Wilderness.

(Above) An Teallach on the right and the Great Winderness mountains of….? Name them yourselves before checking up at the end.

Did you get them right?
