Foul Weather!

29th December 2024

Mild, wet and windy today.

Mild: The colder weather that was forecast for this afternoon did not materialise as the cold front remained north of the Torridon forecast area. The sea level air temperature mid morning was above +10C, mid afternoon; +9.5C

Wet: Persistent rain with heavier outbreaks at times. Burns and rivers are in spate. No evidence of fresh snow around the summits.

Windy: Severe Westerly gales at summit levels. At 15.00 Sgurr a’ Chaorachain (773m amsl), met mast recorded a mean of 61mph, gust of 72mph and the trend is a strengthening wind through the afternoon. The forecast was for the winds to moderate behind the front as the colder air was introduced.

Tomorrow it looks likely that it will remain mild until the afternoon when colder and drier air arrives from the north. However, until then, the Torridon area is on the border between the cold air and lighter winds to the north and mild air and strong winds to the south. A slight shift south of the boundary overnight and during the morning could introduce significant snowfall over the mountains.

Below are a few photos of a bad day in the NW Highlands!
