Garbh Choire Mor
14th January 2022
Today was again unseasonably mild, with hill fog lingering around some summits but lighter winds than recently. What little of the snowpack that remains is stable, patchy and thawing at all levels, and becoming more depleted. Few snow patches exist below 600 metres with mostly bare ground above. Colder over the weekend.
(Below) The Garbh coires of An Coileachan. The Torridon forecast area extends from The Applecross hills in the SW to the Fannaich mountains in the NE. An Coileachan (923m) is the furthest NE mountain/Munro in our area and Garbh Choire Mor has some great winter climbing – when in condition…!
(Below) Mostly rock with a few lingering snow patches in Garbh Choire Mor. The climbing in the coire was once very popular, but requires a covering of snow and an extended low level freeze to come into good condition; the back of the coire (start of the routes) being at 600m elevation. Although quite remote, there is a good hydro road for cycling.
