Thawing

11th December 2021

Today started with occasional showers with some breaks where I could take photos of the snow cover before showers became more persistent for the rest of the day. Precipitation was rain to summit levels and the snowpack was thawing in all locations. Wet snow instabilities were present in some steep gullies and coire rims, elsewhere the snowpack was soft, stable and gradually thawing. As the freezing level drops overnight stability will improve in all locations.

A view into Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe early this morning when there was still good visibility. The snow level is around 55o metres.

Looking up towards Stuc Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe, taken at 500 metres showing the depleting snow cover at this altitude.

Looking towards the same peak Stuc Coire an Laoigh, Beinn Eighe, at 860m. There is much better snow cover at this altitude, particularly on the East facing slopes on the left in this picture.

Looking across to north facing slopes on Stob Dhubh at 782m.
