Thunder and Lightning
11th February 2020
Long spells of persistent snow showers this morning combined with a strong to gale force westerly winds made for another challenging day on the hill. Â Two thunder and lightning episodes raised the alertness level more than expected producing some impressive sized graupel. Â Considerable drifting and snow redistribution taking place above 300m but surprisingly little settling out.
Gloomy morning walking into Creag Dhubh.
Deeper accumulations of fresh snow lying in wind sheltered locations.
Graupel varying in sizes from 2mm up to mini gold ball sized 7mm.
Constant blowing spindrift, especially during the squalls.
Coire Domhain on Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe showing most snow accumulation not necessarily at the highest elevations.
Often the case, clearing up as we were walking off.
