Mingin’ at Lower Levels

6th February 2015

Liathach. A day similar to yesterday mild, calm and with cloud and mist at most levels and pulses of drizzle passing through. With a deep, soft and damp snowpack at lower levels, it was hard going. Occasionally it would clear to help us route find and by mid afternoon, it cleared enough to catch glimpses of the summits basking in sunshine. There is a large amount of snow above 350m on most aspects. Many small single point avalanches were observed on southerly aspects on Beinn Eighe triggered by the mild temperatures and the sun acting on the snowpack.

Most of our day looked like this; flogging through deep soft snow.

Much of our day looked like this; flogging through deep soft snow in the mist.

Toll a' Meitheach, south side of Liathach. We avoided the thawing ice at the back!
